Neutron reflection from interfaces with biological and biomimetic materials

چکیده

During the past decade, neutron reflectivity has increasingly become an important technique for the characterization of biological and biomimetic thin films. Advancements in instrumentation, sample environment and measurement protocols now make it possible to obtain Angstrom-level information about the composition of these materials along the axis perpendicular to the plane of the membrane. A newly developed phase-sensitive neutron reflectivity technique now allows direct inversion of the reflectivity data to obtain unique compositional depth profiles of the films. This review concentrates on the development of these neutron reflectivity methods for the study of peptide and protein interactions with model membranes. 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. Analysis of biosurfaces by neutron reflectometry: from simple to complex interfaces.

Because of its high sensitivity for light elements and the scattering contrast manipulation via isotopic substitutions, neutron reflectometry (NR) is an excellent tool for studying the structure of soft-condensed material. These materials include model biophysical systems as well as in situ living tissue at the solid-liquid interface. The penetrability of neutrons makes NR suitable for probing ...

High-performance Nanopillar Arrays with Anti-reflective and Anti-bacterial Properties

The reflection of light at interfaces limits the performance of optical components. An anti-reflection (AR) coating layer is often applied to improve the optical transmittance. Besides the commonly used singleor multi-layer coatings reducing the reflection, subwavelength nanostructures have gained more attention as an effective AR feature. A wide choice of materials can be nanostructured withou...

ABCD matrix for reflection and refraction of laser beam at tilted concave and convex elliptic paraboloid interfaces and studying laser beam reflection from a tilted concave parabola of revolution

Studying Gaussian beam is a method to investigate laser beam propagation and ABCD matrix is a fast and simple method to simulate Gaussian beam propagation in different mediums. Of the ABCD matrices studied so far, reflection and refraction matrices at various surfaces have attracted a lot of researches. However in previous work the incident beam and the principle axis of surface are in parallel...

Neutron reflectometry on highly absorbing films and its application to 10B4C-based neutron detectors.

Neutron reflectometry is a powerful tool used for studies of surfaces and interfaces. The absorption in the typical studied materials is neglected and this technique is limited only to the reflectivity measurement. For strongly absorbing nuclei, the absorption can be directly measured by using the neutron-induced fluorescence technique which exploits the prompt particle emission of absorbing is...

Neutron scattering—The key characterization tool for nanostructured magnetic materials

The novel properties of materials produced using nanoscale manufacturing processes often arise from interactions across interfaces between dissimilar materials. Thus, to characterize the structure and magnetism of nanoscale materials demands tools with interface specificity. Neutron scattering has long been known to provide unique and quantitative information about nuclear and magnetic structur...
